Comparing each bridge's 2025 National Bridge Inventory record with its 2024 record under the same structure number: 4,395 bridges dropped into poor condition and 2,879 improved out of it, a net change of +1,516 poor bridges (as of August 20, 2026).
51,032 bridges had at least one major component rating lowered; 977 were newly closed and 2,764 newly posted for load, while 362 closed bridges reopened.
4,946 structures appear in 2025 that were not in 2024 under the same number (new or renumbered), and 3,924 2024 structures are no longer listed under theirs, 2,028 of them rated poor in 2024.
So the total count of poor bridges moved from 42,067 in 2024 to 41,677 in 2025 (-390); the gap from the +1,516 above is the structures added to and removed from the inventory.
These are changes in inspection ratings and coded status, not incident reports: a rating drops when an inspector records more deterioration.
